Giving Yourself an A
In The Art of Possibility, Benjamin Zander describes “Giving Yourself an A” not as praise or motivation, but as a declaration of intent. Like Michelangelo envisioning the sculpture already present within the stone, the practice asks us to decide in advance who we are becoming and then act in alignment with that vision.
Most experienced professionals operate in a constant state of evaluation. We assess how we are doing, how we compare, and whether we are meeting explicit or unspoken expectations. While useful at times, this mindset often narrows focus, encourages self-monitoring, and pulls attention away from contribution and presence.
This session creates space to temporarily set evaluation aside and experiment with a different starting point. Instead of asking how you are being measured, participants are invited to consider who they would choose to be if the “grade” were already decided.
